Background

The Department of Education and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth are holding a public consultation as part of the development of the successor strategy to the National Strategy Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life 2011 – 2020 and the Interim Review of the Strategy (2017-2020).

The National Strategy: Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life 2011-2020 was launched in 2011. The strategy set out a clear vision for raising standards in literacy and numeracy in early learning and care, primary and post-primary settings by 2020. Since then Ireland has become increasingly multilingual and multicultural, which is evidenced by the recognition of Irish Sign Language (ISL) as a native and independent language in 2017 and the diversity of languages used in homes. Furthermore, digital technology has become even more widespread.

The new strategy must take account of these new developments and must look to what other changes can be expected in the future that should influence the government’s actions in this regard.

The discussion paper https://www.gov.ie/en/consultation/14180-literacy-numeracy-and-digital-literacy-strategy-consultation/ provides more information and can be used as a support to those providing their views on the development of the new strategy.
